2016 HARKEN SCHOOLS REGATTA – Kristin School A lead on Day One of the Harken Schools Regatta

The Kristin School A team lead on day one of the Harken Schools Regatta with a total of 7 points.  Henry Haslett and his team of Lachlan Grimwade, Leonard Takahashi and Oscar Gunn had a great day on the water winning 5 out of the 6 races.  The first 3 races were completed with ‘Harken’ spinnakers before the wind increased and the final 3 races were completed without spinnakers.

In second place overall is the Rangitoto College team helmed by Nick Egnot-Johnson with his crew of Karensa Jennings, Saffron Nixon and Josh Armit with a total of 16points.  Third overall went to the Westlake Boys, fourth was Wellington College and fifth Auckland Grammar A.  The top five all qualify for the Gold Fleet series which will being on Sunday afternoon and the remaining two qualify for Silver Fleet on Sunday morning.

The Qualifying B group of nine schools are scheduled to begin racing morning (Saturday) morning at 10am with again the top five teams qualifying for gold fleet.

This year’s event has attracted 16 school teams from the wider Auckland Region plus KeriKeri, Opua, Wellington, Nelson and one international team from Rarotonga.  The 16 teams have been split into two Groups which each complete six races with the top five going through to the final series on Sunday.

Youth Training Programme Coach Guy Pilkington commented “All the teams sailed extremely well today!  For many of the teams it was their first time sailing an Elliott 7 and we consistently had 18+ knots today it was tricky!  They sailed well with the ‘Harken’ spinnakers for the first three races and then as the breeze increased we made the decision to sail the final three races without spinnakers.”

The Harken Schools Regatta was an initiative established by the Youth Training Committee to promote the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron Lion Foundation Youth Training Programme and to give school aged teenagers an opportunity to race in a high performance keelboat.  Since its beginnings in 2007 when the event was sailing in Elliott 6’s and only four schools entered it has grown not only in size but is now attracting schools from all over New Zealand. The event has been sailed in the Youth Training Programme Elliott 7’s since 2011.
