The NZL Sailing team to compete in the 2017 Youth America’s Cup in Bermuda during May have been announced, with a strong RNZYS representation.

The team will be led by RNZYS Performance Programme member Logan Dunning-Beck. Joining him will be fellow Performance Programme members, Isaac McHardie, Luca Brown, Harry Hull and Josh Salthouse. The rest of the team is made up of Youth Training Programme graduates Stewart Dodson and Matt Kempkers with Red Bull Foiling Generation winner Micah Wilkinson taking the final spot.

RNZYS Commodores Steve Mair was thrilled to hear that so many of our inaugural squad are being recognised at this level. “It’s really encouraging to see that everything we’ve been working for in the Performance Programme is taking these guys to the next level. I’d like to thank all the Performance Program sponsors and supporters for helping us work towards this goal” said Mair.

As part of the Performance Programme, the team has regularly trained the RNZYS’s two foiling Nacra’s 20’s which was recently covered by News Hub. Click HERE for the full story. This has given them plenty of experience with these boats and will allow them to be competitive at the Red Bull Youth America’s Cup.

They have recently competed in the 2016 Extreme Sailing Series in Sydney giving them optimum experience sailing together as a team. They have also had the opportunity to use RNZYS member Simon Hulls GC 32, competing in local races and events.

In the build-up to the Youth America’s cup many of the team are training hard and competing in the World Match Racing Tour event in Perth in January and February 2017. Dunning-Beck will be honing his skills further by skippering the M32’s for this event.

The RNZYS is extremely proud of this achievement as we strive to continue to be a breeding ground for the next generation of World Class sailors. We look forward to supporting this team on this new and exciting opportunity!
