Slipstream III Wins the 2017 Harken Young 88 Nationals for the Second Year Running!
Slipstream III proves that they are still the top boat!
For the second year in a row Slipstream III, now skippered by new owner Mark Bond, has won the National title for the Young 88 class! A big congratulations to Bond and his team for a well-deserved win and a consistent regatta. “It’s been a great first Nationals with the fleet, there was a lot of tight racing with only ever a few seconds between finishes. Right till the end it was anyone’s game” – Bond.
Skitzo, helmed by RNZYS YTP graduate David Hazard, came in as runner up for the regatta. Hazard also remarked how tricky the conditions were, stating that “quite often someone would come out of the back of the fleet having picked a good shift. Overall we’ve really enjoyed the weekend and are looking forward to next year”. – Hazard
War Machine, the underdog or black horse throughout the regatta, took out third on line, first on Handicap and first corinthian crew. Skipper of War Machine Mike Leyland said that he “was extremely happy with the event and a huge thank you to the race committee, including the Young 88 Association, and all the volunteers. The conditions were so tricky but we’re stoked with our result”.
Head of this year’s Race Management, Celia Carson was ecstatic to get 11 races in to complete the regatta. Fortunately, the weather was consistent all weekend . “We’re really pleased with how many races we got in this weekend and it was a great regatta, great competition and even better racing!”
