From Foiling to Farr MRX the RNZYS Performance Program Claim the Title

The final results are in and RNZYS Performance Program led by Peron Pearse, is the 2017 National Keelboat Champion! Pearse stated that they “had a great regatta with challenging conditions. The other teams were extremely competitive and it was definitely a tough regatta”.

This was the first time that the team of Peron Pearse, Tim Snedden, Connor Mashlan, Aaron Hume-Mary, Josh Wijohn and Nick Egnot-Johnston had sailed together.

Second place, representing the Young 88 association was Mark Bond and his crew off Slipstream, the current National Champions. The crew took their skills and transferred it onto the MRX for the weekend.

After a protest hearing third place was secured by RNZYS Melinda Henshaw, the current Women’s Keelboat National Champion.

The young RNZYS Youth Training program led by first year helm Oakley Marsh showed their potential yesterday finishing up third on the first day and fourth overall.

Another familiar face to the MRX fleet was RNZYS Matt Bouzaid and his team. Bouzaid had a great weekend and are looking forward competing next year.

A breezy weekend brought blustery conditions and kept the racing close! After day one, the top two teams were tied for first place on 10 points, by the end of the regatta only 12 points separated first and last place.

This weekend’s race management team, led by Gerald Flynn did an outstanding job at getting through eleven races inside the harbour. Flynn said that it was “great to have such tight racing”.

It was a hugely successful weekend and we’re already gearing up for 2018!
