It’s all ON for the Youth Match Racing World Championship Trials this weekend at RNZYS

This weekend at the Squadron 9 teams made up of RNZYS Youth Training Programme & RNZYS Performance Programme sailors will compete against each other in a match racing regatta like no other.

This is like a normal weekend for our RNZYS YTP sailors who are always out on the water racing each weekend, except this time there is something massive on the line. The winning team will book their berth to the 2018 Youth Match Racing World Championships hosted on Lake Ledro in Trentino, Italy, from the 3 – 8 July 2018. The remaining 8 teams will not qualify for this event, so the pressure is well and truly ON!

The lineup includes some very accomplished young sailors, including skippers James Wilson (YTP) and Nick Egnot-Johnson (PP) who have both had some strong results over the past year. Wilson finished 2nd at the recent Nespresso Youth International Match Racing Championships as well as 2nd place at the Harken Youth International in Sydney. Nick Egnot-Johnson finished 5th at the 2018 Nespresso Youth International, as well as 3rd at the recent Red Bull Foiling Generation, and will be looking to finish at the top this weekend.

Another one to watch out for is RNZYS YTP Skipper Jordan Stevenson who also had a strong Nespresso Youth International, finishing 4th after going down to eventual winner Leonard Takahashi in the Semi-Finals. Takahashi, who has been in hot form of late winning his last 5 regattas, is not competing as he is in Long Beach California for the Ficker Cup – leaving the door open for another team to claim victory this weekend.

The only female skipper in the fleet is YTP skipper Celia Willison who will be looking improve on previous results at RNZYS and beat all the boys in the fleet this weekend! Willison was part of the girls team who took out the Hardy Cup in Australia earlier this year, so she has already got a taste for winning in her system. Willison has also just announced she will be part of the RNZYS NZ Womens Match Racing Team who have locked in a spot at the upcoming opening round of the Womens International Match Racing Series (WIM Series) in Helsinki – more HERE

The action will take place on the water right in front of the Squadron on Saturday and Sunday this weekend, with match racing to begin from 10am.
