Entries Open for the 2018 PIC Coastal Classic

Entries Open for the Great Race North

We are back! And all fired up to make your 2018 PIC Coastal Classic experience a good one. Entries are now open for the 2018 PIC Coastal Classic online www.coastalclassic.co.nz

This is the 36th time the New Zealand Multihull Yacht Club has hosted the Great Race North and with just less than 200 day to go, we have ambitious plans for the year ahead. Can you help us get 200 boats on the start line?

What we’re doing differently for 2018:

We will be working hard to encourage more boats, first timers and a return of the smaller boats for an adventure packed weekend from Auckland to Russell in the Bay of Islands.

Last year we introduced the cruise rally division, and we’ve since listened to your feedback – you loved this and were by no means in cruise mode! We will continue to expand the cruising division, and aim to sweeten the prize pot for you competitive types.

‘The Coastal’ has a special place in the hearts of many of us, and we want this to showcase what is uniquely special about sailing in New Zealand.  Thanks to our principle partner PIC, we are also working to make the event more visible and spectator friendly for your friends at family on shore.

Please spread the word, invite your crews and friends and family to join you for a great weekend on the water starting 19 October 2018.

PIC extends investment into sailing

The legendary PIC Coastal Classic is set to retain its name– PIC Insurance Brokers have confirmed their continued support as the title sponsor of The Great Race North from Auckland to Russell for three more years.

In a generous move, the NZ-owned insurance brokerage has committed to support the NZ Multihull Yacht Club’s flagship event until at least 2020.

“We have a personal stake in seeing our local communities thrive, and especially the sailing community which we are close to” says Managing Director Mike Garner.

“We know that the PIC Coastal Classic is one of the most important events for the NZ sailing community, and we are certain that our investment can help the event thrive too.”

The PIC Coastal Classic, held annually over labour weekend, marks the start of the summer sailing season. This year, the event will start on 19th October 2018 from Auckland’s Devonport Wharf.

For the fastest few, the race will be over before the end of the working day, however for the majority, and depending on race weather conditions, the race will be a gruelling overnight slog to the Bay of Islands.

Last year, for the race’s 35th Anniversary Edition, 150 boats took part. This year, the organising committee is fired up early, and thanks to PIC’s support, will be able to work harder at bringing numbers back up to years gone past – the aim is 200 boats on the start line.

Entries for boats that would like to compete have just opened online www.coastalclassic.co.nz.

“So much about sailing is changing these days, but it’s nice to know that this iconic event still holds true to its roots and we will make sure it maintains its relevancy for today’s sailors.”

Greer Houston, the NZ Multihull Yacht Club Commodore continues: “We are stoked to have our good friends from PIC Insurance Brokers commit to helping us out for another sponsorship term.”

PIC is a one stop solution for all marine, business, domestic, personal risk, employee benefits, and health insurance. Joining PIC Insurance Brokers with a commitment for the 2018 event already are: PredictWind, Yachting New Zealand and Mount Gay Rum.
