Red Bull Foiling Generation NZ Champs ready to take on the world in Miami

Young Kiwi sailors William McKenzie and Isaac McHardie are ready to take on the world’s best youth foiling sailors at the Red Bull Foiling Generation World Final in Miami this weekend.

The two 21 year-old sailors from the Royal Akarana Yacht Club have set themselves up with a potentially life changing opportunity after rising to the top of the NZ talent earlier this year when they took out the New Zealand leg of the Red Bull Foiling Generation at the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron.
McKenzie and McHardie are buzzing to follow in the footsteps of kiwi duo Olivia Mackay and Micah Wilkinson, who claimed the inaugural Red Bull Foiling Generation title in 2016, and both are very keen to use this event as a launching pad for their sailing careers – just as the 2016 champions have done so very successfully.
Helmsman Isaac McHardie is still ecstatic about winning the NZ edition and is fizzing to get up on the foils in Miami – “Will and I were super stoked to win the event in New Zealand this year. We were one of the older and more experienced teams in the competition which gave us great confidence to stay sharp in what are very fun but challenging and unforgiving boats to sail. We both enjoy the stadium style racing and can’t wait to get out there at the World Final!”
McKenzie is also excited to be heading to the United States for the opportunity of a lifetime – “I’ve never been to Miami but I hear it’s a rad spot! I’m pumped to get over there and see how we stack up against all the other high quality international competitors.”
The young talent on offer in Miami is going to be completely world class but if anyone is going to win it, it will be the experienced crew of McKenzie and McHardie. We wish the boys all the best, the nation is behind you to bring the title back to NZ!
The RBFG is the brain child of double Olympic Champions Roman Hagara and Hans Peter Steinacher, and was designed to find the best young sailing talents around the world and introduce them to the excitement of foiling. At this year’s world final, teams representing 16 countries from 5 different continents across the globe will face off on the water in Miami in a bid to be crowned RBFG World Champions – “Miami is an iconic city and very well known for sailing. Our Flying Phantom {catamarans} will race in the bay, which should provide good sailing conditions and excellent viewing opportunities.” – Hans Peter Steinacher.
