Auckland Women’s 50 50 Regatta set to get underway this weekend at the RNZYS

The Auckland Women’s 50 50 regatta is set to get underway this weekend at the RNZYS, with six confirmed mixed teams ready to hit the water for fleet racing in the Elliott 7’s.

The regatta is mainly designed to encouraged ladies to get on the helm and is an open event for Members of any yacht club, however the skipper/helm of each boat must be a woman. Mixed crews of 4 must have no more than two males in the team, and all female crews may have 4 or 5 members.

The fleet isn’t quite as big as it was for the inaugural event last year – which was won by RNZYS YTP sailor Celia Willison – but there will still be plenty of great young talent on show at the RNZYS this weekend.

Kate Stewart, who has previous experience and success sailing the 29er and 49erFX, will be the one to beat. Kate has RNZYS Performance Programme Sailor Taylor Balogh on bow, and will also have another talented Olympic class sailor Erica Dawson on her team – as well as her sister Greta who is another well regarded up and coming female sailor.

Two skippers – Emma Hyde and Zoe Bennett – are both travelling up from Wellington for the event so there will be some regional pride on the line between the Auckland and Wellington teams.

YTP skipper Megan Thomson, who finished 3rd in 2017, is also competing again and will be looking to improve on last year’s finish. The remaining skippers include former YTP sailor Harri Wren, and current YTP sailor Rebecca Gmeur Hornell.

There is still space available for late entries too, so if you are interested in taking part then contact and get an entry in for what will be a great weekend of sailing.

Racing will get underway at 10am on Saturday and Sunday on the water outside the RNZYS.
