CAMPER UPDATE: Only 3000 miles to go...

19 November 2011
On day fourteen of leg one CAMPER with Emirates Team New Zealand has broken through the 3000 nautical mile barrier on the race to Cape Town.
CAMPER now has just under 3000 miles to go in the 6500 mile slog from Alicante to Cape Town.
CAMPER remains in third place shadowing the front boats into the South Atlantic 164 miles off the pace of new leader Telefonica.

With the rounding mark of Fernando

With the rounding mark of Fernando de Noronha now well behind CAMPER all attention has turned to avoiding the light winds of the St Helena High and getting south into the more solid pressure of a developing cold front.
Skipper Chris Nicholson says that if the obstacle of the high can be worked around heading south the front has the potential to catapult the boats to Cape Town.
“The tactics from here are to try to wait for an opportunity and not try to force something that isn’t there.
“There are a lot of miles to go. We need to be sensible about it. If there’s a ridge or a big weather system then we might have a chance to get back in the game. That’s all we want – a chance and we’ll give it everything we’ve got.”
CAMPER in the latest position report at 01100h 19 November NZT is averaging 13.2 knots in a 14 knot easterly.
