RNZYS Lion Foundation Youth Training Programme team competes at the Selangor International Youth Match Racing Championships in Malaysia

The first international event on the calendar for this year’s RNZYS Lion Foundation Youth Trainees is the Selangor Gapurna International Youth Match Racing Championships held in Malaysia from 22 – 26 August.

(Already, the selected youth team affectionately refer to the regatta as the ‘Mini Monsoon Cup’)

This is the first time this youth match racing event has been held, and is hosted by the Royal Selangor Yacht Club, Port Klang, which is just outside Kuala Lumpur.

The team of five sailors to represent the RNZYS Lion Foundation Youth Training Programme was selected last month from the 34 trainees currently in the Youth Training Programme.

This regatta presents an exciting opportunity for the selected youth sailors and is an appropriate event to mark the success, expansion and development of 20 years of the Youth Training Programme itself.

The Team

The team, their current positions in the Youth Training Programme and Boat sponsors are:

Helm: Michael Thorpe: skipper Boat 4, Harken

Main: James Williamson: skipper Boat 2, Watts & Hughes

Trimmer: Reuben Corbett: skipper Boat 3, Ports of Auckland

Pitman: Bradley Farrand: mainsheet, Boat 3, Ports of Auckland

Bowman: Michael Edmonds: skipper, Boat 8, CRC

Coach:Guy Pilkington, RNZYS Training Manager

Since being selected in July the team have been training three nights a week at Westhaven, in addition to their weekend sailing in the Squadron’s Saturday Winter Series and the Youth Training Programme.

The team are all under 20 years of age, however the event is targeted to under 25 year olds and will be sailed in Platu 25’s, which none of the team have ever sailed before.

Coach Guy Pilkington is travelling with the team and is positive about their competitiveness in this new class of yacht; “the team have been training together in the evenings for the past two months and also during spare time in the weekend, they are a strong team and the new boats won’t be a problem”.

Both Michael Thorpe and Michael Edmonds are in their 3rd year of the youth training programme, James Williamson & Reuben Corbett are second years and Bradley Farrand is in his first year.

Reuben and Bradley are both from KeriKeri but have moved to Auckland for University and sailing.

The sponsors of the event, Gapurna Group and the host city, fully support the event that forms part of the nation of Malaysia’s 50th Anniversary.

Gapurna Group has also waived the entry fee for the 8 competing teams from; Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron, Singapore Sailing Federation, Hong Kong Sailing Federation, Hebe Haven Yacht Club, Royal Brunei Yacht Club, South Africa Sailing Association, Cruising Yacht Club of Australia, Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club

Racing starts tomorrow, Wednesday 22 August, with a double round robin.  Watch the RNZYS website for daily updates from the team!
