The RNZYS Lion Foundation Youth Training Programme – Can you handle it?

Applications are now open for the 2010/2011 Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron Lion Foundation Youth Training Programme.  This prestigious sailing programme started in 1987 and has far exceeded expectations producing many sailing champions, now it’s your opportunity to join!

This year brings another new era and added advantage to all trainee’s as the Elliott 6’s are being replaced by Elliott 7’s, which carry four crew (helm, main, trim, bow) as opposed to the previous 3.    This in-turn extends the size of the programme to over 40 trainees.

Training Manager and Coach of the programme for the past 5 years, Guy Pilkington is pleased to report that over 30 applications have been received, including three from international sailors moving to Auckland from Perth, Ireland & Austria.

“The RNZYS Lion Foundation Youth Training Programme offers young sailors the experience of a full year-long campaign” comments Pilkington.  “We have a very experienced team of Race Management who run races for us every weekend, ensuring the highest level of racing over 3 mediums; drills training, fleet racing & match racing.  This year the new Elliott’s will boast both Spinnakers and Gennakers, again widening the skill base of all the trainees.”

The Schedule

The schedule for the year is basically every weekend from May until November.  In December the Elliott’s are sailed to Kawau Island to run the National Youth Training Week and the Christmas Break is from mid December to early January.  Other break weekends include Labour Weekend (Coastal Classic), Queens Birthday Weekend, Easter and during most Squadron events.
A full detailed calendar is provided to all applicants.

Competition
During the year trainees are selected to represent the RNZYS at a number of National and International events, such at the Governor’s Cup, Balboa Yacht Club California, Harken Youth International, Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club, Sydney and many more.

Trainee’s are also compete in the Monday Stewart 34’s Championships, Tuesday Ladies Racing, Wednesday Series, Thursday Young 88 Sprints, Winter Series, Commodores Cup Series, Club Championships, BMW Auckland Regatta and many more on various Auckland boats to again widen their skill base.
