Sailing at the Squadron
Here at the Squadron you can go sailing nearly every day of the week in almost any sort of keel boat and multihull, from YTP Elliott 7m, Young 88’s, Stewart 34’s, & MRX’s to the non-one design fleets of the Club Marine Wednesday & Club Marine Winter Series and Havana Club Rum Races. With the exception of the Commodore’s Cup Series and the Cruising Rallies, Squadron racing is open to members of any yacht club.
The 2013-14 Season starts with Opening Day on October 5th. This is a day for all the family to come and enjoy the clubhouse, not just the sailors. The traditional firing of the canon at 1100hrs by the Commodore makes sure the season starts off with a bang! For the 2013-14 Commodores Cup Series there will be 6 races in the series. 2nd November is a new race – Haystack (Orapapa Island) is the farthest point. February 7th & 8th is Squadron Weekend with the ever popular Night Race to Kawau Island, the Kawau Island Race followed by the shore party and BBQ at Kawau Island Yacht Club on Saturday night. 1st March is Te Kouma and 5th April is Round Rangitoto, considered by most to be the closing race of the Summer season.
Stewart 34 Windward Leeward Monday night racing. One Design racing that gets the heart racing and blood pumping. With spinnaker and non-spinnaker divisions the S34’s are a powerful machine to race. The first Race Day for the S34 fleet is 4th November 2013.
The Tuesday Summer Series is a chance for the women of the Squadron to show the boys how it is done. Tough competition with 4 windward leeward days amongst the 10 race series. Also on Tuesday nights a short-handed division is available so why not hone those 2 & 3 handed skills with a short harbour course? There are 6 race days available for short-handed racing.
The Club Marine Wednesday Series has it’s first start at 1755hrs Wednesday 9th October 2013 and runs fortnightly. With over 120 boats in 12 divisions, from the Member’s Bar it is a sight to behold!
The Thursday Jerry Clayton Elliott 7m Sprints are a chance for members to join with youth and race the Youth Training Programme Elliott 7m boats. The Series starts 10th October 2013 and runs fortnightly.

In March each year is our largest open keelboat regatta, the Auckland Regatta, which founded in 2008 is a combined event with Bucklands Beach Yacht Club. The Squadron also hosts the Young 88 National Championships and the Farr 1020 National Championships in April each year.
Youth / Junior Sailing
The RNZYS also has a focus on youth sailing and has run the world-renouned RNZYS Lion Foundation Youth Training Programme since 1987. Each year the Squadron accepts over 40 youths to train for a full, intensive year in both fleet racing and match racing (view Programme Details). Many of our graduates have achieved amazing results at the highest level of the sport, including Olympics, America's Cup, Whitbread/Volvo Ocean Race and many have achieved outstanding results on the World Match Racing Circuit (view Graduates page here).
