History of the Youth International
The International Youth Match Racing Regatta started in 1990 when it was first won by the RNZYS team of Gavin Brady, Stuart Clarke, and James 'Skip' Baxter. The event was then sailed in the Elliott 5.9 Youth Training Keelboats.
In 1996 the Coca-Cola trophy was donated and the event was renamed the 'Coca-Cola Cup' and quickly became regarded as the unofficial World Youth Championships of Match Racing. In 2011 we are pleased to welcome HARKEN New Zealand as naming rights sponsor.
Many of the young sailors who have competed in this event previously have now cemented places in America's Cup Syndicates, Volvo Ocean Race teams as well as achieving very high World Match Race rankings. Names including; Gavin Brady, Ian Williams, Cameron Appleton, David Endean, James Spithill, Adam Minoprio, Torvar Mirsky & Phil Robertson, just to name a few!
