2007 Farr 1020 National Champion - RAINBOW IV Andrew Wills - Report from Skipper Andrew Wills

Eleven Farr 1020’s entered the 2007 nationals which were run in conjunction with the Farr 11.6 owners championships by race officer Ngaire Markwick and her team from RNZYS.  I was lucky enough to be asked to helm 'Rainbow IV' and bring four of my mates as well.  I was really excited about racing in the 1020’s again and immediately took Alan (the owner) up on his offer.  Saturday had great conditions, with south west winds ranging in strength from 12-20 knots.  The first race got underway on time and right from the outset we could see that our suspicions of it being close racing were correct.  Most of the lead boats in the first race worked the shifts on the left resulting with Clever Choice rolling us on the run to finish taking the first win of the series.   That was the last time the left paid all series as we were sailing too far out from the Kohimarama shore to get any geographic effect and the breeze seemed to be stronger in the middle of the course.  Quite often boats that got spat out at the start came back well from the right which made for really interesting racing.  The racing was a little too close at times and a few collisions occurred.  The first between Clever Choice and Ambiance, resulting in the loss of some wind gear.  The second involved Max Headroom and Echelon that resulted with Echelon gaining average points for the remainder of the series.  The crews of all the boats were all pretty knackered after getting five races complete in top end of number one conditions.

Sunday started out with a postponement due to lack of wind.  Once the wind filled in we got three more fair races away to complete the eight race series.  The last race being the closest with three boats finishing within two meters of each other.  At the conclusion of the regatta there had been six different winners from an eight race series including one first equal between ourselves and Ambiance.

I would like to thank my crew of, Tim Lidgard, Matt Kelway, Peter Waters, Jayson Herbert, Colin Burrows, and Alan Smith (owner).  I learnt a long time ago that it doesn’t matter how good you think you are, you’re only as good as your crew and I am very lucky to have these guys sail with me in a lot of regattas.  The owner of the boat also went to the expense of buying a new set of sails to ensure we were competitive which was a big commitment on his behalf.

Farr 11.6 Owners Championships 2007

By Scott Grayson (Skipper/Owner – Warringa)

Even before the regatta started the Farr 38’s were very excited with the entry list showing 8 boats entered of which two had made the journey North from Tauranga to compete.  Apart from the six Auckland boats – the two boats from Tauranga  - General Jackson & Satchmo (both previous National Champ winners under previous owners) were going to be hard to beat - as they had assembled some of the best Tauranga sailors to take on the Auckland boats.  Racing started on Saturday with a moderate breeze from the SW of around 12 knots before building later in the day to just above 20 knots.

Racing all day with the five races sailed was very tight between the four top boats: Satchmo, Warringa, General Jackson & Magic Dragon with Accliam occasionally spoiling the positions for the top places.

As the breeze built during the day the selection of headsails started to change with some boats opting to drop down to there # 2 where as some elected to stay with there # 1.  The breeze was shifty with no clear dominant side favouring – making for close racing.  At the end of the day there were several protests of which we were involved in two of them, both with Magic Dragon showing just how close the racing was.

Sunday morning saw a postponement due to no breeze - which allowed the boys a bit of a rest from the five race hammering the day before.  The breeze came in after a couple of hours and we were away racing with 10 -12 kts SW which again made for great racing for the final three races.  The slightly lighter breeze allowed some position changes between the whole fleet and every shift was important to be on the right side of.  At the end of the regatta there were four different boats that had claimed line honours victories which proved the racing was tight. Thanks to the RNZYS for hosting the regatta and to Ngaire and Ross Marwick and there team including ‘Aqua man’ – aka Besty for all there work during there regatta (it would not happen without you guys). Finally thanks to my crew, Andy Ball, Jerry Stephenson, Chris Sadler, Doug Kemp, Craig MacDonald, Ian Mckenzie, Karl Banks, Israel Evers.
