Event History

Previously know as the 'Diet Coke Cup', the Youth International Match Racing Regatta started in 1990 when it was won by the RNZYS team of Gavin Brady, Stuart Clarke and James 'skip' Baxter.  The event was then sailed in the Elliott 5.9m Youth Training Keelboats.

In 1996, the Coca-Cola trophy was donated and the event was renamed the 'Coca-Cola Cup' and quickly became regarded as the 'unofficial' World Youth Championships of Match Racing.  Competition is always tough and this is an event that everybody wants to win.  Traditionally ten teams are invited, although in 2001 the event was run with twelve international teams and in 2000 with sixteen international teams.

Yacht Clubs from around the world are invited to compete in this series comprising of a double round-robin, semi-finals & finals.  Many of the sailors who have competed in this event previously have now cemented places in America's Cup syndicates, Volvo Ocean Race teams as well as achieving very high World Match Race Rankings.

This International competition has an expansive global reach and has attracted young sailors from Denmark, Sweden, France, Italy, USA, South Africa, Japan, Australia, the UK and naturally New Zealand.
