Edge Women’s Match finish second in Marstrand

RNZYS Performance Programme team Edge Women’s Match have finished second at the GKSS Match Cup Women’s Trophy in Marstrand, Sweden.

Helmed by Celia Willison, the team ended up in third place after the round robin which put them into a semi-final against Swede Lovisa Karlsson. The semi final was a close fought battle but they managed to come out on top, beating Karlsson 3-2.

They then went up against another Swede, Anna Östling, in the final. Östling had been the one to beat over the course of the regatta after topping the round robin and comfortably winning her semi final, and that continued as she showed her class to beat Edge Women’s Match 3-0 and claim the GKSS Match Cup Sweden Women’s Trophy title.

This was still a superb result for our young all girls RNZYS PP team as it was their first outing in the M32 catamarans, not an easy boat to get the hang of quickly.

Speaking just after the final, Willison was pretty happy with how things went in Marstrand –

“The final today was a lot of fun, it was really breezy so we got to send it around the course. Unfortunately we got pumped by Anna 3-0. We had a bit of a crew change because Paige {Cook} was sick so she couldn’t sail with us, but Anna was far too good for us today.”

“We are super keen to come back and give it another crack next year! The boats are so much fun to sail once you manage to overcome the realisation of how fast they can go. Everything is so heavy on the M32’s too, it’s seriously hard work!”

“I’m very extremely proud of the girls and how we went, we improved so much the whole week and that’s all we could ask for, making the final was a really good result for us.”

“Bring on the next regatta!”
