Get ready for summer and Learn to Sail for FREE during Lockdown
Have you been thinking about learning to sail but don’t usually have the time? The RNZYS is excited to announce that we will be offering a second FREE online Level One Learn to Sail Course during this extended lockdown. The course will consist of three 90 minutes Webinars run by the RNZYS Learn to Sail Manager Peter Linford, following the Yachting New Zealand Level One Introduction to Keelboat sailing syllabus. During this course you will learn the basics of keelboat sailing including
- Hazards, equipment, parts of the boat and sailing definitions
- Hoisting and changing the mainsail and basics of sail trim and telltale use
- Avoiding collisions and recovering a man overboard
- Understanding weather forecasts and the clothing suitable for different conditions
- Learning a variety of knots and their uses
- Performing all roles associated with tacking, gibing and other crew positions of a boat
- A knowledge of the ‘Give Way’ rules
The online course will from 7:00-8:30pm across three nights – 18th, 23rd and 25th November
In order to receive the Yachting New Zealand Level One Qualification, RNZYS will offer attendees a reduced price of $250 to complete the practical aspect of the course on the water. This will be a day course once Auckland restrictions ease to allow on water sailing classes to commence.
The Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron has been running Learn to Sail courses for five years, with over 400 students each year completing courses. The RNZYS runs a Level One Introduction to Keelboat sailing, with pathways into Level Two or Three for advanced cruising or racing. This gives the option for sailors to head into crewing on keelboats in the RNZYS club racing or spend time cruising the Hauraki Gulf.
