Mastercard National Youth Training Weeks

Week 2 : 10th December – 16th December 2023

The Mastercard National Youth Training Week was established in 1989. Each year Yacht Clubs from around New Zealand are invited to send a four person youth crew to share in the intensive sailing experience synonymous with our world-renowned Mastercard Youth Training Programme. The week of training gives young sailors the opportunity to receive intensive theoretical and practical instruction in the various aspects of competitive keelboat racing in a disciplined environment.

Crews meet at the Squadron at 11.30am on 4th December (Week 1) and 10th December (Week 2), the bus leaves at midday. ETA at Sandspit is 1pm.

Week 1 will return on the same bus and their ETA back at the Squadron is 2pm.  On the 16th (Week 2) crews will sail the Elliott 7’s back to Westhaven, ETA 3pm.

Trainees: Trainees must be between 14 and 20 years of age. Yacht Club teams must have a reasonable standard of sailing competency and experience.

Coaching: Coaching during the week is under the guidance of RNZYS Coach , Zak Merton, and supported by YTP Members, Graduates and other Staff.

Crews: Crews may apply individually or should consist of four sailors – helm, main, trim & bow.

Meals: Three meals will be provided each day. In addition, the Kawau Island Yacht Club store sells a variety of food and miscellaneous items for purchase.

2023 Fee’s:

$1400 pp or $1200 pp for RNZYS members

This fee includes transportation from the RNZYS Clubrooms to Kawau Island, Elliott 7m training yachts, coaching staff, accommodation at Kawau Island and meals.

Yachts: The 10 Elliott 7m training boats owned by the RNZYS Mastercard Youth Training Programme are used for the training week.

Transport: Crews are required to make their own way to the Squadron Clubrooms, they travel by bus to Sandspit then by boat to Kawau Island. On the final day trainees will sail the Elliott 7s back to Westhaven Marina. All teams are responsible for their own travel costs to and from the Squadron.
