The KNOTS Racing team of Nick Egnot-Johnson, Sam Barnett, Zak Merton and Tim Snedden know first-hand the ecstasy of winning the 2019 Harken New Zealand Match Racing Championship, and are coming to get their hands on the trophy again after an agonising 2nd place in the 2020 edition.

“KNOTS Racing has been match racing together extensively for 4 years now”, says Nick. “The team has been doing little match racing in 2021 due to covid so we are super excited to use the NZMRC to get stuck back into some racing”.

Alongside their victorious 2019 NZMRC campaign, Nick and KNOTS Racing won the 2019 Governor’s Cup and OM International on their path as high as 2nd in the World Match Racing rankings, before a written off 2021 season derailed their world ranking.

However, Nick believes KNOTS Racing has been tracking well and have “enjoyed getting back out on the water as a team to practise match racing – we are feeling super rusty for sure but it is all slowly coming back to us.”

They need to get up to speed quickly – with the KNOTS Racing team receiving their 2nd invitation to the 2022 Long Beach Congressional Cup in April this year.

Competing in the 2019 Long Beach Congressional Cup was a major highlight for the KNOTS Racing. “Being able to compete against the likes of Taylor Canfield and Ian Williams was a huge learning experience and a time that we will never forget”.

“For us as a team, the Congressional Cup is the pinnacle of Match Racing and we are looking forward to lining up against the world’s best match racing teams”, says Nick. “We just want to improve and re-learn as much as possible and use this event to help build-up towards the Congressional Cup.”

This doesn’t mean however that KNOTS Racing are taking the Harken New Zealand Match Racing Championship lightly. “We are going to be pushing as hard as we can to try and win the NZMRC – there are going to be some pretty slick teams at this year’s edition with the likes of our coach Reuben Corbett’s team and Robbie McCutcheon’s Performance Programme team”.

Nick and KNOTS Racing can’t wait to get back on the water and test themselves against New Zealand’s best match racers, and we are looking forward to seeing some world-class match racing on the Waitemata Harbour again.
