YTP Alumni Regatta catchups – Megan Thomson
We caught up with one our RNZYS YTP alumni regatta entrants, Megan Thomson, and asked her a few questions ahead of this Octobers big event. Megan is the current skipper of the all-girl 2.0 Racing team who compete at many sailing events including match racing events, Barfoot & Thompson Women’s Keelboat Nationals & Tuesday Ladies Series, among others. Read what Megan had to say below…
What was your favourite moment of YTP?
Over the space of three years, there were definitely too many to count! A highlight would be one of our overseas regattas in Noumea – I don’t think our team stopped smiling and laughing the whole event!
What years were you in the programme (or working/volunteering in the programme)?
2017-2019, PP 2019 to current.
What was the best thing you got out of the YTP?
A group of girls to yacht with! We currently sail against a number of ladies who did YTP when they were young and have been sailing together for a number of years, some since the first Women’s Keelboat Nationals 31 years ago – I guess I’m super grateful for all of the relationships formed, and I hope in 30 years my team and I will still be racing in major events, like the ladies we look up to now.
What are you looking forward to most about the YTP Alumni Regatta?
I’m probably most excited to race against and meet a number of Alumni who were before my time. Looking at the entry list there is a number of legends jumping in for the event. The opportunity to be on the same start line doesn’t come around every day.
The RNZYS YTP Alumni Regatta will take place at the RNZYS from the 15th – 17th October 2021. We are calling all current and past YTP sailors, graduates, coaches, staff, and volunteers together for a very special RNZYS 150th event this year. The weekend includes a harbour race, Elliott 7 sprint racing & match racing, as well as a fun evening or two off the water.
