RNZYS 150th Gala Blog Update
The Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron is set to sparkle on Saturday 30th July as we celebrate our sesquicentenary year in style at our RNZYS 150th Gala Evening.
The idea behind this is to put on an exceptional event for Members to get dressed up and come along to celebrate what will be a truly unique milestone occasion that we know all members will enjoy and remember for many years to come.
Arrive at the Squadron from 7pm onwards, dressed to impress, and immerse yourself within our RNZYS 150th Gala experience. Each of our spaces has a different theme, form of entertainment, as well as different drink and food offerings. With eight totally different spaces open, the gala is essentially seven spectacular events all wrapped into one night as you roam the Squadron and explore what each has to offer. The spaces have various seating and dining options available for all ages.
Starting with what is sure to be the main event, the vast Squadron ballroom will be the epicentre of the evening and will include a live big band – the Red Velvet Seat, a 7 piece band playing classic hits from all the years whilst you dine and drink your way around the live chef and bar stations.
As fitting as could be, the Dinghy Locker will feature as the ‘Yachties Bar’ with classic yachtie favourites on offer throughout the night, with theming to match.
Heading up the stairs you will soon stumble upon the Members Bar, with the ‘Kiwi Classics’ theme, serving classic fish and chip parcels with matching beverages.
Take a step back through the years and head to the Cornes Library for ‘Gin and Billiards’ accompanied by the silky sounds of a jazz singer. We will have the finest Beefeater London Dry Gin on offer and the billiards table will be open for competition so pick up a cue and try your luck, or simply take a seat in Cobweb Corner, tell a few stories, and reflect on 150 years of this great club.
Interested in the warm sound of the saxophone, while walking through aisles of artwork throughout the decades? Then the Quarterdeck with its ‘Classic Yachts’ theme will be the place for you. Enjoy a slow dance or simply sit back and enjoy the sounds with a glass of wine in hand.
The Commodores Room is taking on a ‘Whiskey Lounge’ theme – indulge in our luxe set up of Persian rugs, rustic book cases and leather couches. Enjoy a Glenlivet Whiskey or a tea / coffee and relax a little.
The once forbidden Committee Room will also be open, where you can view all of the Commodore portraits dating back to 1871. Try your hand at roulette or blackjack, all while contributing to a worthy cause.
The final room is the Members Lounge, which will serve as an exclusive area for those that purchase the Commodores Warrant ticket option with a few extra special food items on offer. The room’s entertainment will include Lewis McCallum playing the saxophone. The room will feature a Mumm Champagne lounge, with Ora King Salmon, Caviar & Blinis on the menu.

The Captain’s Pass includes wine, house bubbles, beer, and non-alcoholic beverages throughout all of the venue as well as your food for the evening and entertainment. This is priced at $150 and is excellent value. There is a cash bar also available if you wanted to try some of the cocktails on offer in the Commodores Warrant package.
For those that would like to indulge in a few extra things then the Commodore’s Warrant is for you. On top of the Captain’s Pass inclusions this also includes Mumm Champagne, Cocktails, and spirits as well as access to the Member’s Lounge that will have a premium food and beverage offer to also try. This is priced at $250 per person and again exceptional value for what you will receive.
